Watch
Hill is a picturesque, seaside village, listed on the National
Historic Register with charming boutiques, cafes, restaurants and lodging facilities.
Watch Hill has a Lighthouse constructed in 1808 with a visitor's museum, as well
as the oldest Flying horse Carousel in the U.S.A. The ruins of Fort Mansfield,
from the Spanish-American War, are at the end of mile-long Napatree Point. Watch
Hill is considered one of R.I.'s most selected beach resorts, and boasts one of
the most magnificent sunsets on the East Coast overlooking Little Narragansett
Bay. The stately Victorian homes are grand. Although the interiors of the mansions
are inaccessible, the magnificent exteriors and the spectacular views along winding,
oceanfront roads are a sight to behold.
Downtown
Westerly is a charming village with a blend of Victorian and Romanesque
architecture. The town boasts a unique variety of specialty and antique shops,
restaurants, delis and cafes, and some offer spectacular river views. Beautiful
Wilcox Park, in the center of town, consists of 14 acres of meandering paths,
a duck pond, fountain and grand old trees. The park and downtown district host
arts and special events all year long. Families are invited to enjoy live performances
of Shakespeare in the park, farmers' markets, art festivals, and an annual pops
concert complete with fireworks. The Colonial Theater schedules live productions
from spring throughout the fall. Downtown is rapidly becoming known as a thriving
arts community with historic buildings that have been converted into artists'
galleries and studios.
